WELCOME TO THE FIFTH ANNUAL RES 10
People often ask us how we choose the eclectic group of innovators that comprise each year's RES 10 list. Like many of the activities that go into creating an issue of RES as a whole, it's a complex, slightly arcane and possibly dysfunctional enterprise, entailing the solicitation of nominees from an array of curators, artists, previous RES 10 listees and friends; the circulation of the long list among the RES staff members, who compose passionate, written explanations for the inclusion of certain of these nominees; and then an often contentious discussion ranging from existential musings on the meaning-of-RES to what makes each nominee's work, think about his/her innovations and ponder the potential of upcoming projects to have a strong impact on our world at large. So part of the process is about luxuriating in cool work; another part entails some articulation of merit; another part looks forward to comtemplate a future that looks good to us; and a final part celebrates gut instinct and a feral craving for material that's exhilarating. As a result, the list is always eclectic - this year's RES 10 includes figures from design, filmmaking, installation art, music and some of the hybrid spaces in between. Let us know what you think of the list, and if you want to make nominations for future lists, send them to: [email protected].
